The stand was harvested in March. The auditor asks in October.

What happens today
- The pad is filled on the bonnet of the pickup, on a damp page, and the photo of the finding sits in a phone gallery mixed in with the weekend’s.
- The stand is identified from memory and the road chainage gets written down as “where the big alerce is”.
- The operation is packed up, the machine moves to another estate and the contractor’s contract ends. The evidence is left in four files that do not talk to each other.

- The brigade chief and the contractor’s safety officer, on the day the condition is declared.
- What is left
- The shutdown and restart times, the cool-down round, and the state of the tank, pump and spark arrestors, with the time set by the server.

Roads and drainage structures · the round after the rain
- Who does it today
- The roads inspector, with the earthworks contractor’s supervisor.
- What is left
- Every culvert as a fixed point, with its diameter and its condition, and the round compared against the previous one on the same screen.
- 04
Nursery · seedling quality control and despatch
- Who does it today
- The nursery manager and the seedling quality supervisor, seedbed by seedbed.
- What is left
- Height and root collar diameter with range validation, and the batch traced through to the estate and the stand where it was finally planted.

Processing plant · shift talk and work permit
- Who does it today
- The sawmill shift supervisor, before the crew goes down to the chain basement.
- What is left
- The signed attendance list with the national ID masked according to who exports it, and the permit with its validity and the exact level where the work was done.
What gets asked for once the operation is gone
In forestry a large share of the work is done by service contractors, and the evidence is asked of the client company. No program makes anyone compliant: what a program does is make sure the record exists, is dated and has a named owner.
